The Secret to Changing Your Circumstance!

Years ago I watched Oprah interview a girl who was suffering from anorexia (and probably the worst case I had seen). Another guest was trying to give her advice on how she overcame her bulimia by telling her she needs to nurture her mind. Easier said then done right? The anorexic girl responded with “But How?”

Oprah  had a profound ahaha light bulb moment when she realised that the “But how?” is the reason people continue to struggle.

“But how?”

How can you heal your pain, how can you really stick with your weight loss plan, how can you restore your health, how can you move past your negative circumstance. If we knew how than we wouldn’t be so deeply lost!

It’s a question I get asked a lot. Many people ask me how I healed my body from illness and depression and even how I  stay so thin and stick to eating healthy.

The secret is simple (but also so freak’n hard!)

You need to make a decision that you want something different from your life. Without this simple first step you can’t really move on from your circumstance as it all starts here!

You need to make a decision each day that you want to live.

I mean really LIVE – have energy, feel great, feel confident,  feel love. All those things that make your day worthwhile, you need to want it so bad that you can’t accept anything else into your life.

We always seem to accept 2nd best into our lives. This occurs in every area of life and we stick with the easy option or what we are accustomed to. We stay in jobs we hate, relationships that aren’t working and accept that our accept our body flaws as “genetic” and here to stay.

We have been conditioned by our environment and our upbringing to believe that this is it. Life is hard and we are all battlers.

Sure life can swing us some painful curb balls but we always have the choice on how we respond. We can choose to get up and get over it, we can choose to get help or take steps towards our desires. We have a choice to live exceptional lives just as misery is a choice.

You may be going through something really terrible right now and are screaming at me that you haven’t chosen this feeling and I get it, we don’t choose what happens to us, BUT we can choose how we react and respond to our pain and circumstances.

My sister lost her best friend to suicide earlier in the year. The details are really, really horrific. It’s one of those stories that you think only happens to other people or in movies. Without going into too much detail, she was with him just before it happened and was the one to go back and have to call the police. The last 9 months have been the worst of her life and she has gone through unbearable depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress.

BUT even though her soul is on fire with pain she makes the decision every day to get up and take care of her kids and husband and try to get through this. She makes a decision that she will try to look for the good in life even though everything is pointing her to believe that life is horrific and painful. She has bad days and she has horrific days, she hasn’t felt a glimmer of a good day in a long time but she gets up each day despite of this.

It’s not easy but the point is even in the worst circumstance you can take teeny tiny steps to get through your day and choose  to try to get out of your situation.

From the age of 14-21 I was chronically ill but I made a decision that I would be healed and that illness was no longer a part of me.

Through my 20’s I battled depression on and off to the point of wanting to end my life but I made a decision that I would fight it and live a life of joy

I made a decision that I wanted to take care of my body, feel vibrant energy and health,  turn back the clock, feel amazing every day and have a great body.

I make a decision each day that I will look for the best in people and look for the best in life and with those eyes I can see miracles each day!

I have recently  made a decision to take a huge risk and leap of faith and I am going to make my dream’s happen and not settle for a work life that does not serve me or others!

When you make a decision you also need to take action. It’s not always going to be easy but you take the steps to get to where you want to be, and you make the steps with the intention that this is for life.

Write out your goals and then write out the steps you need to take to achieve this. If you’re feeling really low then start by setting very small tasks for yourself to achieve throughout the day. Last month my sister decided to find something each day that she was grateful for take a picture of it and post it on FB. This re-focused her pain and forced her to try to find something positive.

This is not a dress rehearsal, this is it. We have one shot at this so we have to give it all we have.

Everything that you desire, whether that be better health,  to lose weight, find a job you love, a relationship, healing, or whatever it is. EVERYTHING already exists for you. The kingdom of heaven starts here. You can experience it in this life but only if you make the decision to manifest it, you need to make the decision to give it everything you have and you need to make the decision that you will not give up on your goal until you see it, feel it, touch it.

How To FEEL Good Naked

How you feel about your body is much more important that how you look. There are many woman with stunningly perfect bodies who don’t feel good in their own skin.

So many woman are so busy striving for perfection that they forget to enjoy the journey.

Your light within is what will illuminate your true beauty and make you much more attractive to others.

Love yourself first and foremost and focus on your beautiful qualities rather than focus on your flaws. What you focus on in life is what will be prominent in your daily life. Continuing to think your fat will make it very difficult to lose weight.

Make the conscious decision to take care of your body and be as healthy as possible and then give it over to the universe. This is when you will start to see yourself in a beautiful light and you are more likely to see results.

Lately I have been a little too obsessed with trying to look perfect. As a health and fitness blogger with a desire to turn my enthusiasm for nutrition and fitness into a full-time gig has made me focus on perfection a little too much. Recently I really had to check in with myself and ask myself why I was doing this? Was I working out like crazy because I wanted to be healthy or was I trying too hard to look perfect?

My motivation to exercise was always to get my endorphins kicking and to be healthy and fit, but somewhere along the line something shifted and I became a little too concerned with my flaws or more so what wasn’t perfect. It didn’t help when someone started pointing out my body flaws and driving me to try for perfection (damn those PT’s).

I had never really worried about my body before and had  always viewed my body well. When I first started to put on weight I actually loved having curves and my stomach never ever worried me!

When I started obsessing over exercise I knew that something was definitely off. I am fairly intuitive and know when there is deeper stuff going on. I spend so much of my time delving into personal development books and know the role our thoughts have in our reality so luckily I could see what was going on with me before it got out of hand.

When you strive for perfection it is usually something else that is missing in your life and it is often a way we distract ourselves from the underlying issues.

I will be completely honest and open and share with you that a lot of my insecurities of late have been around being single at 33. I  have been single for too many years to tell you and it does get it in my head. I have an amazing wonderful life and am incredibly blessed in so many areas but this is one area that I feel brings me down.

There are many times I feel  like I am not good enough. I often face rejection and feel unattractive because of it. I know perfectly well that I can attract guys but I can never attract the right one who wants to be with me. This is something I struggle with every day and on a very deep level it makes me feel like a failure.

It’s not something I talk too often about  and most of the time I pretend I am perfectly fine with it, but with you I will share the fact that I am not.  The older I am getting the more pressure I put on myself to have the perfect body to attract someone.

Working out does take my mind off it all and I will always advocate exercise to get you out of your head but there are days when I am leg pressing  120+kilos and questioning why I am putting myself through the torture!

I share this with you so that you can be aware of your  own insecurities and to name them. As soon as I recognise behaviour that is not healthy for my mind and soul I know to give it over to the universe and let it go.

I will never be perfect and that’s ok.  I would rather work hard on being a beautiful soul than have a perfect body.

After enduring many years of illness I know that each and every inch of my body is a beautiful blessing and I will honour it. I know that if I eat a cheeseburger and don’t work out that it’s ok.

I am incredibly thankful  for a metabolism that most woman would kill for and most of the time I have the freedom to walk around in a bikini and feel confident and liberated.

We all have something  about us that sets us apart from everyone else. I know you do too!  Own the things you love about yourself and let go of the things that don’t matter.

You are beautiful and intelligent and funny and sexy as hell.

Yes you!

Owning this and knowing this is the secret to looking good naked.

Every woman and man wants to look good naked or at the beach and I promise you there is no magic pill, diet or exercise routine that can make you look good if you don’t FEEL It!

Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. Just FEEL it!

I read recently that one of the easiest ways to feel good about ourselves is to recognise the beauty in others and give compliments!

See beauty everywhere and you will start to see the beauty within. Ever noticed how the women that are always attacking other woman, particularly bitching about someone else’s looks are usually incredibly insecure. People treat others how they see themselves. So start treating other people with admiration and see their inner beauty and soon enough you will recognise your own!

I am cutting down my crap of wanting to be perfect. Sure I will still be happy if my abs show up (and trust me you will be hearing about it!) but I am not going to worry too much about it. This is me, like it or not! Heck how often do I show my god damn abs anyway! Who cares!

I want you to join me in this lovefest and take a look at the reason’s behind your desires to lose weight, gain weight, tone up or whatever. Ensure that you have set the RIGHT INTENTION. With the right intention you will succeed.

Bed Bound To Gym Junkie – My Story of Healing

I really believe in being as authentic as I can with people who take the time to read this blog. I have never wanted to be the type of health blog that posts pics of what I eat every day or go into intimate details of my day (more so because it’s freak’n boring!) But there is a part of my story that I want to share with you today so you get an idea of who I am and where I have come from. I am not all about working out and eating clean to look good in a bikini (just to be real – I am a tiny bit about that!)

There are parts of my past that I have shut the door to and don’t revisit very often as they are really painful, but these things are a huge part of how I arrived at the person I am today.

Yesterday a chapter of my life was revisited when I went to a BBQ with friends whom I hadn’t seen in 10 years. These friends are very much part of my story and we held such a deep connection due to a common thread.  These dear friends were part of my support system – a support group I was a part of when I went through 7 years of chronic illness.

I’ve shared a little bit about my past health problems before but to recap, at the height of my illness I struggled to get out of bed, had muscle weakness and pain so severe that I would literally crawl to the bathroom and trips to the mall were sometimes in a wheel chair. There were times when I was so sick I was scared I would die, and then there were the times I was so sick I wished I would have died. There seemed to be no hope for me and no cure. No one really understood the cause of my illness and doctors suggested that I may be sick the rest of my life. Very few people fully recovered so it was something I would have to learn to live with. I was petrified to what my future looked like.

My support group was a place where I was understood and accepted. When so many of my friends didn’t understand or left me, these new friends were exactly like me and it was a huge relief. Finally someone understood.

Fast forward 10 years and I have been completed healed. Although I still suffer some niggling unrelated issues like IBS,  I have been healthy for over 10 years.

I was really nervous going to this BBQ as it was another life time ago and I was scared of the emotional floodgates it would open! But I was also excited to see everyone. They will always forever be part of me! It was sad to see that a lot of my old friends weren’t 100% and still struggled with their health.

I was able to proclaim my good health and of course everyone wanted to know how I healed myself or what the pivotal turning point was to my healing.

To be honest I don’t know if I can ever answer that. We all tried everything so what I did wasn’t any different from what they tried.  I was blessed enough to have parents who invested a lot of money in restoring my health and I think I tried every alternative therapy out there. It wasn’t until I tried Chinese medicine and acupuncture that my body began to show the first signs of healing. I will never forget that day. After about a month of acupuncture, herbs and intravenous vitamins  I walked out of the clinic and my body felt light for the first time in years. I was so used to the feeling of led in my legs and exhaustion from walking short distances that for the first time I felt this was lifted. It was the first time after 5 years that I felt a tiny flicker of light at the end of the tunnel!

For me my main turning point was when I made a decision to separate myself from my diagnosis of CFS/ Fibromyalgia. After 7 years of illness it didn’t matter what I had, I thought that if there was no known explanation as to why my body manifested this illness than there was no reason it couldn’t manifest health. I had made 100% commitment in my mind to be healed. For many years disease was my identity. I was known as the sick one. I couldn’t get past saying hello to someone without them looking at me with ‘that look’ and asking how I was feeling. I was tired of the attention the illness brought on. I did not want this illness to be any part of me so I tried my best to separated myself from it. It didn’t exist as far as I was concerned.

 

 

For this reason I distanced myself from my support group as it was the only way I could be distant from my illness and not be caught up in the talk of disease.

My healing was gradual over 2 years but it soon became a distant memory. I have gone from not being able to get out of bed or walk to not being able to sit still. I now have to remind myself to rest as I can’t help but be active now!

I don’t know why I healed and my friends didn’t. I know they want to be healed just as much as I did and it breaks my heart that they still live with it after all these years.

What I do know is you have to believe and think your good health into existence. There is no illness that the body and mind can’t heal. You need to believe in the impossible!

Maybe you’re battling an illness right now and are reading this thinking  “I am doing that! Of course I want to be healthy” But then so many people with a disease are quick to go back to thinking about  the science of the disease or the test results. If that’s the first thing you think while reading this than that may be why you are not healing.

I am going to repeat this…. there is nothing that the body and mind can not heal!

You have to believe it. You have to say it to yourself over and over again…

“I am perfect health”

Forget about the research or the science or what the doctors are saying….

There is nothing that can not be healed.

You’re body has the ability to heal.

My motivational God father Dr Wayne Dyer was diagnosed with leukemia a few years ago. He has been teaching personal development and the power of the mind his whole career and then he was faced with actually having to walk the talk! His first reaction was to freak out a little about having Cancer but then he decided he was going to be healed.  If there is one book you should read this year it should be Wishes Fulfilled by Dr Wayne Dyer, as he goes into detailed of being healed by St John Of God – an energy healer in Brazil. I won’t go into too much details about it, you need to read the book or watch his interview with Oprah on Super Soul Sunday, but after his healing he decided that he was healed and he was no longer going to check his blood for Cancer. He didn’t need a Doctor to tell him he still had Cancer. In his head he was healed and eventually he’s body would catch up. He now feels extremely well and lives a healthy life. He is healed no matter what  he’s blood count tell him. The label leukemia is no longer apart of him.

This is healing! The moment you doubt your bodies natural ability to heal you or the moment you justify your ill-health by your blood results you block the healing.

You are perfect health!

There are  countless examples of people who have completely healed from diseases that were terminal or Chronic and this can be your story too! Another out of this world book to read is one called Dying to Be Me by Anita Moorjani. This is a story of a woman who had a near experience after her body’s organs shut down from Cancer. This is a remarkable example of the power the mind and body has to completely restore to full health.

Yesterday was a welcomed and much-needed reminder about how far I have come. Sometimes I forget about what my life use to be like. I have never taken my body for granted and have always felt incredibly blessed to get out of bed and walk each day, but sometimes I forget the incredible power my body has for healing.

The power to heal is within you. If I can heal so can you! Expect Miracles!

How to Get Out of a Funky Mood

I have to confess… I have been feeling stuck in a bad funk the past few weeks. At one point I was blaming my hormones because that’s what girls do –  we have a tendency to make excuses and blame everything on our hormones!

As much as I try to be positive, have a good attitude, read inspiring and empowering books, say affirmations, have deep spiritual conversations, exercise and eat healthy, sometimes I just feel shit.

Know what I mean?

There are times when none of the above work because I am stuck in the “poor me” mentality and focusing on what I don’t have in my life and whatever negative situation is going on around me.

As much as I am hoping and praying and visualising and manifesting I can just feel so hopeless, helpless and stuck. Like I don’t know what more I could possibly do.

Do you ever feel this way?

When I get like this I usually know how to fix it and also the reason  I wound up in a funk.  The answer for me is meditation. Without it I go back into a funk!

If I could share with you one tip that will totally transform your life it is meditation. The frustrating thing is even though I know this and swear by this practice I tend to make excuses as to why I can’t. Normally the excuse is I don’t have time in the morning (I can’t get up early enough) or I want to watch X Factor. Crazy right? That’s my excuse to why I can’t do something that will transform my spirit!

Last night I told myself to cut the crap. I was going to inhale the good shit and exhale all the bad shit. I was going to be committed to meditating every day for the next 21 days.

If it’s good enough for Deepak Chopra and Oprah it is good enough for me!

Meditation can even be just 5 minutes of silence, it doesn’t have to get witchy woowoo or mystical. It is simply the quietening of the mind. For those that are more spiritually inclined it is a way to connect to your source.

Remember in Avatar when the Avatars connected their tail to the tree of souls That’s what meditation feels like, it’s connecting back to spirit, connecting back to the universe, love or God (whichever you choose to believe). The cool thing is we have this power inside of us and we don’t need a tail to connect to a tree!!

Meditating is incredibly magical as it creates shifts in your energy which ultimately affects the way the world receives you and the way you receive the world. When you quieten your mind life flows much more feely and you are able to co-create miracles. After all a miracle is just a shift in perception and meditation allows for this shift to take place.

I want to encourage you to join me in making a commitment to meditating as often as possible! I am going to resume practicing every day for at least 5-2o minutes. If every day is too much, no dramas just try it a few times a week. I have written another blog on meditating which outlines a great exercise to practice but you may also want to try the variety of visualisation meditations on itunes. I mainly meditate on anything from Wayne Dyer, Gabrielle Bernstein and Maria Elita’s The Miracle Meditation.

How to Manifest Your Dream Body

There is a specific art to manifesting the body of your dreams. Sure there’s the usual way i.e eat good, exercise often. But there is also this ‘magic’ factor that people either forget to incorporate into their lifestyle or they just don’t know what this ‘magic’ is.

But before we get into finding out what this magic ingredient is – a little history is needed.

A few years ago, about 2009, I was traveling the beautiful country of Italy. It was here that I discovered the true secrets to losing weight without doing the things you don’t like. *cougheatingasparaguscough*

I literally ate EVERYTHING. Pasta, bread, meats, oils, pizza, coke – there was nothing I would deprive myself of!

I ate everything with such pleasure. I savored every single bite, every little herb and I dwelled in the flavors for what seemed like a lifetime. Pizza had never tasted this original or tasty!

And don’t even get me started on the drinks. Uh… I think it was a glass of wine for breakfast, morning tea, brunch, lunch, snacks AND dinner (so just a normal day then?).

What about exercise? Well, we walked a lot, as tourists do. I complained a lot, as tourists… wait, no, so that was just me then?

And in those three weeks of being in Italy, I lost *drumroll* 8 kilos!

BOOM!

I manifested weight loss without actually doing anything! (Except eating more?)

How? You ask.

The answer: (this is the ‘magic’ ingredient) PLEASURE!

What the!?

Okay, so once I came back from Italy I put it to the test. I became this crazy, loving and vibrant force and I took pleasure in everything that I did, I lived in the moment and gave 100% of myself to whatever it was that I was doing/focusing on – with pleasure.

I had put my request of ‘weight loss’ out to the universe looooong ago and because I was now emitting so much positive energy (meaning NO resistance to weight loss whatsoever) I dropped weight like a mofo!

So, the trick is not to eat healthy and exercise, but to do it with PLEASURE. You can eat the bread, the chocolate, have full fat milk but this time do it with PLEASURE not guilt. Exercise with pleasure not agony, and if it gives you agony DON’T DO IT.

Find an activity that you take pleasure in doing and eat the foods that give you pleasure because the universe rewards you for feeling good about YOU. Not doing the paleo diet or cross fit! Do YOU first, please yourself FIRST and watch those kilos drop off!

Keep Your Mojo Flowing! How to Keep Motivated

Sticking to a diet or fitness regime can be tough and most of us at some stage lack the motivation to keep us on track. Our work, social and family lives can quickly throw us off track if we don’t find the motivation to keep going on the healthy lifestyle path.

I have the occasional day where I can’t be stuffed but most of the time I am pretty motivated and have successfully stuck with healthy eating and regular exercise.

I want to share with you my secrets to keeping your mojo flowing.

1. Write down your goal – Be specific do you want to lose 10 kilos, gain muscle, have a defined flat stomach, be able to run 5-ks or  a half marathon; go 8 weeks without sugar. Maybe it’s just a general goal to keep healthy and fit? Whatever it is, write out a clear goal and put it up everywhere!

2. Set an intention – Think about the reasons why you want to achieve this goal. Is it to be healthy, lose weight, have more self-confidence? What do you want your ideal life to look like, with this life change. Eg. My intention is to be fitter and healthier in my 30’s than any time before and to feel good each day.

3.  Stick to a schedule that works for you – try to work out the time that you are more likely to stick to a fitness routine. When you are sticking to a schedule you are forming a habit, within time it will become second  nature. I am not a morning person so I don’t even attempt to do morning workouts. I love to destress after work so I have a night-time workout schedule and I pretty much stick to the same days.

4. Find a fitness activity that you enjoy – When you find something that you like to do, you will look forward to this activity. If you absolutely hate the gym don’t join one! Find something else you enjoy.

5. Mix it up –  Don’t do the same fitness activity every time as you won’t be challenging your body. Mix it up with cardio, weights, stretching and anything else that takes your fancy. Even though your main activity should be something you enjoy also throw in an activity that challenges you.

6. Vary and Experiment with food – You will never feel like you are dieting if you are trying new foods, adding new textures and flavours to your palate. When you have a variety of delicious healthy foods to choose from you will never feel hungry. Also add instead of subtract. If you are cutting out sugar, add in something healthy. I have lots of recipe ideas on my blog! Try my healthy chocolate substitute.

7. Find like-minded friends – When you set out on a healthy eating plan or a new fitness routine I can guarantee you that some of your friends or colleges won’t like it! I can’t tell you how much crap I get from people just because I am fit and choose not to eat junk. I get made fun of every day! It’s the awful side of human nature! It’s vital that you find friends that are on a similar path and can give you support. Some people also like to find a workout buddy to motivated and accountable. Feel like you don’t have support? There are many forums on the internet where you can chat to like-minded people or email me – I love to motivate people!

8. Knowledge is power – I have said this before, but the more you educate yourself by reading and watching documentaries the stronger your will becomes to resist the junk food and unhealthy lifestyle. You will begin to really understand what poor nutrition and lack of exercise will do to your body.

9. Feel the difference – This is by far my greatest motivator. I have been 6 months off sugar and  processed food  and I never want to go back to the way I use to feel. I felt sick almost every day in the afternoon due to my unstable blood sugar levels and just generally felt crappy. Eating healthy makes me feel so much more alive!

Mission Body Love: 15 Tips to Better Body Acceptance

Embrace your body acceptance

Kids crack me up man. They’re so bluntly honest about everything it can be quite refreshing an yet quite confronting.

I remember when I started nannying for this family and on the first day the youngest came up behind me and smacked my butt and blurted out “You’ve got a big bum!” and within a millisecond I replied “Well my boyfriend loves it big!”

I had just defended myself against a 4yr old. Wow.

After the day was over I remember thinking silently in the back of my mind “Oh my god, do I really have a big butt? I do, don’t I! Everybody I walk past is thinking that as well.. OH MY GOD THAT’S WHY PEOPLE STARE AT ME!! Am I… fat? OH NO I AM AREN’T I!?!?” and cue bursting into tears.

Honestly wtf?

As small or stupid as this incident may seem, it was a huge indicator to me about how I really felt about myself and it wasn’t good.

This (among maaaaaaaaany other incidences) started my journey to self love and care. BOOM! And it’s not a case of one day it just slaps you in the face and you know exactly what to do, it’s more of a series of slaps in the face that clue you on to something not being ‘quite right’.

So off I started and I was keen to do whatever it took to make me feel better about myself and my body (and that’s another huge factor that I believe you need, the ‘I will do ANYTHING attitude’) and below I decided to share some of those things with you to help you on your mission.

Mission Body Love: 15 Tips to Better Body Acceptance
  1. Take up a class of something you’ve always wanted to do (i.e burlesque, desert making, pole dancing etc)
  2. Create for yourself a weekly pampering ritual whether it’s a bath with your favourite salts and oils or a spa at your local swimming club.
  3. Spend more time naked and familiarizing yourself with your body.
  4. Write about how you’re feeling in your self love journal.
  5. Find/buy/create outfits that make you feel good/sexy/hot/cute/beautiful/gorgeous etc.
  6. Practice EFT and using affirmations.
  7. Talk to people you trust, have a sounding board.
  8. Dance literally as if you were the most un-co person in the world.
  9. Find things that make you laugh – whether it’s a comedian, youtube vids, fail compilations etc.
  10. Step outside of your comfort zone.
  11. Think about parts of your body you do love and amplify that ‘love’ feeling.
  12. Try a new exercise, sport or group class that you’ve wanted to try.
  13. Read books with similar themes i.e Eat, Pray, Love
  14. Work on your limiting beliefs with books and audio programs (Change your brain, change your body by Daniel G. Amen is an eye opener!)
  15. Stop waiting for permission to do the things you want to do and DO them. Write at the top of a page ‘What do I Want?’ and then sit there and write! Then go and do them!
I think a lot of people get stuck between wanting to change how they feel and taking the action to change it – because that is the only way you will ever feel better about yourself.. taking action.

So if life has been slapping you round lately, how’s about we start looking to take some action?
I know… It’s scary, you don’t want to, you feel lazy, you can’t be bothered, it terrifies you, you have no time, you’re too busy, you’ve got kids, you’ve got work, you’ve got a boyfriend, you’ve got uni.. blah blah blah.
Just remember….. There are two types of people in the world, those who have reasons & those who have results. Taking action doesn’t require much, only courage. The universe handles the rest.Which one are you going to be?
